Pratyusha was born in Madras, India. She worked as an Assistant Director in documentary, television and advertising in Mumbai for over six years. She graduated with an MA in Filmmaking (Direction) from the London Film School in March 2013.

Born to parents from very different communities in India, Pratyusha has always been fascinated by questions of identity, class and religion- themes that dominate her films. Her focus has been on developing strong, honest characters and tracing their journey within a realistic, yet poetic style.

Her most recent short film 'Oysters' was commissioned by Film London and the BFI Net.work in 2016 and was screened at the East End and Underwire Film Festivals in 2017.

Her previous short 'Safar' has also travelled extensively to festivals including the BAFTA qualifying Aesthetica Film Festival and winning the audience award for BEST SHORT FILM at the Indian Film Festival Los Angeles as well as in Stuttgart in 2015.

Pratyusha was selected to be a part of the BAFTA Crew x BFI NET.WORK IN 2018 and is currently developing her first feature length films as a writer/director.

When not working on her own projects Pratyusha works full time as a freelance 1st Assistant Director on Features, Shorts and Branded Content.

“Safar’s delicate approach treating difficult social realities and inflexible structures; the spare yet playful manner in which it deals with power and class relationships; the deceptive ordinariness of its plot, which in turn allows for visual poetry and creates space for strong performances, made the film the winner of this year’s festival. The jury admired the filmmaker’s subtle examination of social codes as she builds up a powerful story that is refreshingly free of bombast. The understated narrative was glued together by a haunting track by Tajdar Junaid.”

“Skillful direction and understated performances shine in this nuanced exploration of the challenges and triumphs of starting over.”
